About the Event
I have been invited by The Mokuhanga Innovation Laboratory (MI –LAB) http://endeavor.or.jp/mi-lab/ to study the traditional craft of Japanese Woodblock Printmaking in November 2019. I want to expand and enhance my printmaking repertoire by learning Japanese woodblock printing and incorporating this traditional craft in my contemporary practice.
The word Mokuhanga means ‘woodblock print’ and emerged as early as the 16th century portraying Japanese landscapes / city life, the antiques of famous politician and celebrities and geishas. This method of printing has increased in popularity due to its non - toxic application.
The MI LAB residency is a five - week programme where the fundamental skills of Japanese woodblock image transfer, carving, printing, registration of paper and much more is learnt from master carvers and printers of this ancient art, while staying near a rural lake town located at the base of Mt Fuji.
