About the Event
Mokulito means “wood lithography” in Japanese. The technique was created in Japan in the 1970s by Ozaku Schisi and has been developed more recently by Ewa Budka (budkalito) and her father Josef Budka.
Like the lithographic techniques, Mokulito relies on the fact that water and oil do not mix. As in traditional lithography, the image is drawn using greasy inks and crayons onto the printing matrix or plate.
In Mokulito, the plate is made of wood. As a result, the image alters slightly each time the plate is printed and degrades quickly, therefore the editions are small and variable.
Each plate is printed in a single session, as the image can’t be preserved to print later.
The Workshop
On the first day of this 2-day workshop, you will learn how to prepare your plywood plate, try and test out the drawing materials, draw into your plate and cover it with Arabic Gum.
On the second day of this course, a short inking demonstration will be given. After this, the printing stations will be prepared for inking your plate.
The plate will be washed out before printing.
By the end of the course, you will take home a small variable edition of prints.
Please come ready with some ideas or images for inspiration, as this will be an energetic and fast paced course!
